How did tortoise get his shell?

Long ago there lived a tortoise named “Tommy” on an island. That time tortoise did not have shells. He had a ‘deer’ friend whose name was “Blaze”. Blaze and Tommy usually played in the forest. One day they both decided to have a race but Blaze was unhappy since, it was a huge jungle with high trees bushes and creepers and he could not jump over them. Tommy was happy since he could crawl from between the creepers and bushes. Tommy reached the destination but Blaze was no where to be seen. He shouted and shouted but he could find Blaze. In the end he was tired and started searching for some food and found a beautiful place. It was a beach. He was disappointed that his friend missed seeing such a beautiful place. Tommy finally found some sea weeds in the sea. He wanted to have them and so he started crawling towards water. Since he could not swim he fell into the sea.

When he reached the bottom of the see he found an oyster in the sea with its mouth wide open. He thought he could get some food inside the oyster. He went near him, and fell into his stomach. He was struck as the oyster closed his mouth, with his head and legs dangling outside and was unable to come out. He shouted for help but there was no one to help him. He was so disappointed when suddenly he saw a huge animal approaching him. It was a shark. He was scared seeing him; and thought it was better to stay in the shell than come out.

After the shark left he opened his eyes and tried to come out. Many fishes tried to pull him out but could not. He decided to come out of water with the shell over his body and slowly paddled back to the land. Later, on searching he found Blaze stuck in the bush. Before he could reach him he saw a hunter moving towards them. Blaze was hidden in the bush so the only choice Tommy had to hide in the shell again. He realized that shell was so helpful to him and saved him from his enemies. He wished he could hold as to the shell forever. Then there would be no fear of animals. He started praying to god that his young ones also should have shell over their body so that they could hide from danger or when an enemy approached them. God listened to Tommy’s prayers all the tortoises after that had shells on their body.

Why does a porcupine have needles on its back?
by Sarrah Lahorewala from Mumbai

Many ages ago, creatures called velvies existed. They stayed in burrows lined with lichen, soft grass and petals of daisy. The velvies had wonderful velvet like skin and they lived in hiding for fear of their skin being cursed, mainly by rabbits who boasted about their furry skin being the best in the world. One day the velvies sent a little boy called Porky to collect wild gooseberries for supper. Porky took a yellow pack and set off. He started wandering around for sight of gooseberries orchid. He searched and searched but no sign of any orchids. He lost his way and could not find his way back to his burrow. Soon he heard thumps behind him – sound of footsteps of probably hundreds or so animals. He ran as fast as his legs could carry him and climbed a pine tree. He realized that the creatures following him, were attracted by his wonderful skin, they were all fascinated, except for the rabbits, who were envious of him. “Do not worry, we won’t harm you”, said Mrs. Lolly giraffe. Porky cautiously got down and began walking away, making the rabbits furious. The rabbits began to think of a plan to get rid of the velvies. “There is nothing we can do”, said Grandpa rabbit and banged his head on the pine tree. Many needle like thorns fell down from the pine tree, which gave an idea to Grandpa. The rabbits whispered amongst themselves and soon preparations began for running Porky’s skin meanwhile Porky got tired searching for his burrow and sat down under a tree and fell asleep. The rabbits following his saw their chance and began digging a hole in the ground few yards away from Porky. They prepared a mixture of pine thorns and grease, which was poured down the hole dug by them. Then they waited for Porky to get up. Soon, Porky woke up and as per the rabbits’ plan Porky walked straight towards the hole, which was covered so well with grass that it almost merged with the surroundings. As porky fell down the hole the pine thorns and grease stuck on him and from top the rabbits poured another cauldron of the same mixture. Now Porky was covered head to toe in the mixture of grease and pine thorns, which stuck on his skin and it was impossible to remove them then from that day onwards all velvies got needles on their back. After this incident Porky was called “Porky with pine thorns”. As time passed the velvies came to be known as “Porky-pine”. Now they are called “Porcupine”!!

How did elephant get his trunk?

Once upon a time there lived an elephant called Cargo with his wife Maxi and little daughter Minnie. That time elephants didn't have any trunks. Cargo's family was very friendly with Kalu monkey's family who lived in the same forest with his wife and son Kapu. Years passed, Minnie and Kapu grew up and became very good friends. Kapu liked riding on Minnie's back.
Once it did not rain for an year and a famine struck the forest. All the animals started starving without food and water. Kalu monkey's family managed to collect food and water for themselves because they could climb trees. But the elephant's family started starving because they had no long necks or hands to catch up anything and had not even collected much.
One day Minnie could not bear her thirst and went to her friend Kapu's house and requested him to help her.
Kapu felt pity on her and took her to the 'Sunnora Caves'. This cave had plenty of water and food but it opened only from sunrise to sunset and closed automatically at the sunset. Both Kapu and Minnie went inside the cave.
Minnie had a great time playing in water, drinking, eating. She just lost track of time. But, soon it started getting dark. Kapu asked her repeatedly to go out of the cave but Minnie didn't listen to him. Kapu came out of the cave alone.
When Minnie saw the cave door getting closed automatically she ran towards the door. She just managed to put her head out and the door closed completely. Now, her head was out and her body trapped inside the cave. This was a terrible situation. She started crying loudly. All animals of the jungle came near the cave and started pulling her out holding her nose. But nothing happened. Next day, when sun rose, cave's door opened again and Minnie was released. But, everybody was surprised to see her nose, which was hanging like a long tube. None of the animals liked her new look. Minnie also didn't like it and started crying. Her parents consoled her saying "Everything happens for the good."
That night it rained heavily in the forest. The whole forest was flooded. Minnie saved many young animals lifting them with his long nose and taking them to safer places. She found her long nose very helpful to catch, hold, lift and move anything. She thanked god for the trunk and prayed that her generations to come should also have a trunk. All animals also realized that the trunk was very helpful to Minnie.
Elephant we see now with trunk are all descendents of Minnie.

How did elephant get his trunk?

Long time ago, when life had just started on earth, there was a group of elephants living in the jungle. That time elephants didn't have any trunk and their noses were just like human beings. The elephants of this group were extremely lazy and foolish except for an old elephant who was very wise.
All the member of his group respected and trusted him and took his advice before starting any new work.He was also always ready to guide and help them. Everyone in the group called him 'Wise'.
One day Wise fell sick. He thought his end was near and got very worried thinking about the future of the elephants of his group. He decided to meet the king of the Jungle, Lion, and ask him to look after his fellow elephants when he will be no more.
On his way, suddenly, his nose got stuck into a small hole in a tree. He tried to pull it out but he was not successful. He requested the monkeys, giraffes, rhinos, and all other animals of Jungle to help him to pull his nose out of the tree. After lots of efforts, his nose finally came out. But, everyone was surprised to see that his nose has changed into a long trunk.
When he reached the King's Palace, the guards could not recognize him and didn't allow him to enter the palace. Poor Wise returned home.
When all the elephants saw his trunk, they thought it was the king's order for the all the elephants to keep long noses. So, all of them started pulling each other's noses to make them elongated like trunks. Thereafter, all the elephants got trunks since birth.

How did elephant get his trunk?

Long time ago, when elephants did not have trunks, they used their mouth to do everything. If they had to drink or eat something, they did it through their mouth. It was little troublesome because they could never eat from tall trees etc. But, they never thought of an alternative.
One day, Bholu, the cleverest of all animals, went to the jungle and saw a banana tree. He wanted to eat the fruit but could not reach to the tree because it was too high. He tasted some bananas, which were lying on the ground. Bholu liked the bananas very much. He wanted to eat more but it was not possible for him to reach the tree.
Then suddenly he got an idea He went to a plumber and asked him for a pipe. Then Bholu went to a tailor, asked him to stitch the pipe to his mouth.
After that Bholu went to the Banana tree. He rolled the pipe around a bunch of bananas and pulled it down. Bholu ate lots of bananas and took some for his friends in the Jungle.
Every body in the Jungle was surprised to see pipe attached to Bholu's mouth. They all liked it very much. All the elephants wanted to have pipe stitched to their mouths. All of them purchased the pipes from the plumber and got it stitched to their mouths.
This is how they got their trunks.

All the elephants have trunks because of the clever Bholu.

WHY IT RAINS

Sometimes the moon and stars fight. When they fight, it makes the clouds sad. When the clouds are sad, they cry. When the sun comes out to tell the clouds that the moon and stars have stopped fighting the clouds get so happy they spread a rainbow between themselves.

O MIGRATORY BIRDS

O'Migratory birds!
O'Migratory birds!
From where are you coming?

O'Migratory birds!
What is your culture?

O'Migratory birds
Why are you staying for some days in Delhi?

We know that you,
Don't like noise,
But what can we do?
Delhi is city----
The trucks and the buses
Can disturb you.
But like Bharatpur and
Sultanpur, it too is a natural place

Please do not go away
We will not hunt you
In fact, we will save you
From hunters.

A TREE IN MY GARDEN

There is a tree.
In my garden,
With a strong trunk,
And green leaves.

It has fruits and flowers,
It gives us shade,
It keeps the air clean,
And the world beautiful.

Do not cut trees,

Hey make the nature green
Give life to human beings.

MY JOYS

I really believe in the nighttime
When I am asleep in my bed
That my toys get out of their boxes
And dance on the carpet instead
I wish that I wasn't so sleepy,
For then I should stay up and see the toys that I keep in my boxes.
Go jumping and hopping around me.
Oh it would be jolly to catch them
I am safety in bed
But as they don't come when you watch them
I imagine them playing instead as
They give me joy immense!!!

Oh, Earth on Earth!

What has happened to you?
Why have you changed from black to blue?
Earlier you were bright
Everywhere there was light

But it has changed to darkness
Because of man's hardness
Pollution and pollution every where
No place to live with healthy air

Trees are being cut at a speed
To fulfill man's need
Oh, Earth you are a real beauty
Maintaining you is our duty.

PLANTS

Plants are very important part of our life,
Because they help us survive.
They give us oxygen,
And take in Carbon dioxide.
Plants give us food to eat,
And give us Oxygen to breathe.
Plants provide food for the animals too,
Whether they are in the jungle or in the zoo.
Therefore we should plant more trees,
So that the world is a better place to live in.

Want to go to jail
And come out on bail

Don't drive at midnight.

Go slow,
Let the speed be low
The roads can be free
If you let them be.

India doesn't need any more balm,
Since you became our president Shri Abdul Kalam.
You advised our government about river linking,
So that, our country's future would not be blinking.
You defended our motherland with powerful missiles,
But even the external relations were cemented by you when fragile.
You made a lot of arrangements for kids education,
Even took care of the senior citizen's pension.
Please be our president till eternity,
because only you can protect our peaceful sovereignty.

Magic of the cloud

When I was standing alone,
I desperately wanted the heat to be flown.
The sweat coming from my body was at heights,
And the fans and air conditions had lost their flights.
Then suddenly what I heard was a strange sort of voice,
Its volume increased and it became a noise.
First I looked at the front and then looked behind,
But there is nothing, I thought in my confused mind,
But I saw something, when I looked upward in the sky,
It was out of my reach, as it was very, very high.
At some places it was dark, some places light blue,
But what was it? I didn't have a clue.
But something fell from the sky that made the heat slain.
And I joyfully realized that it was rain.
People who were standing at the road side,
Started looking here and there as for searching for some ride.
The water on the roads was enough to hire boats,
To prevent it some peoples put on their raincoats.
One of the people used an umbrella instead,
But water still flowed down his head!
Children started preparing for paper boat races.
And the feeling of happiness, I saw on their faces.
My own heart was filled with a pure sense of joy,
I wanted to sing, dance and enjoy.
And I also wanted to say aloud,
That it was the magic of the cloud.

Once, Akbar wanted to take test the intelligence of his people. So, he asked a question from them and no one was able to answer. The question was "how many crows are there in India". When, it was Birbal's turn to answer. Birbal cleverly answered "There are 1010 crows in India". Akbar asked him, how was he so sure about the answer? Birbal said, "If there are more than 1010 crows then some crows have come to India from another countries and if there are less than 76 crows then some crows have gone to other countries

communal violence in gujrat the essence of india is that - religion is irrelevant to nationhood. religion is a private affair. but what's happening in gujrat? it defies all such logics. people of one religion are killing people of other religion. hundreds of lives have been lost in ethnic violence in gujrat. how can civilized countrymen do this? how can they behave like animals? all religions teach non-violence. all religions encourage brother hood. have priests, pundits and moulvis failed in their duty. i pray all mighty, that better sense should prevail in all of us so that we become better indians. civilized, sympathetic, non-communal, peaceful and friendly. with a spirit of live and let live.

life is a flower, smell it, life is a kite, fly it. life is an air, feel it, life is a mountain, climb it. life is a pool, swim in it, life is a book, read it. life is a notebook, write in it, life is a questionnaire, solve it. life is everything, but… don't spoil it.
