Mammoth
Cave is the longest recorded cave system in the world, with more than
360 miles (580 kilometers) of connected tunnels. It's also the second-oldest
tourist attraction in America, after Niagara Falls, with guided tours
offered since 1816.
Huts used by an 1840s tuberculosis colony still stand, as do mining
pits from 1812. Mummies have been found in the cave, and you can still
see petroglyphs (cave drawings) that are thousands of years old. ......more |

Wrath
The
Volcano of Fire in western Mexico blasted ash and gas three miles
high, with an explosion that was heard in villages 10 miles from the
crater. The 12,533-foot volcano on the border of Jalisco and Colima
states - 420 miles west of Mexico City - is among the country's most
active and most dangerous. It has erupted repeatedly in recent years.
On July 27, a pre-dawn explosion shot incandescent rock, ash and steam
