Pokemon was created in 1996 by Nintendo for their best selling portable video game system, "Game Boy". They are a class of unique little Pocket Monsters that battle each other when instructed to do so by their trainer. The original Japanese term for Pokemon was "Poketto Monstaa" meaning the Pocket Monster. Soon the Japanese shortened the name to "Pokemon". A Japanese game designer Satoshi Tajiri took six years to invent Pokemon. It is based on his childhood memories of collecting bugs in jars and wishing he could make them fight like the monsters in his favorite science fiction movies.
What is Pokemon Game?

Pokemon is a creature with unique powers. In the Pokemon world, human beings act as Pokemon trainers and capture as many of the Pokemon creatures as they can with the help of the Pokemon that they have. The captured Pokemon then join the trainer's team and help them capture other Pokemon, enabling the trainers to become "Pokemon Masters". Pokemon battles have a rigid code of rules that do not allow dirty tricks or easy ways out. Also, Pokemon battles never end with a creature's death. The successful end to a Pokemon match occurs when one of the battling monsters faints and is rushed to a Pokemon Center for recovery, or when it is captured by a trainer and put in a ball called the Poke Ball. Once caught, Pokémon can then be added to your party and trained. You can carry up to six Pokémon with you at a time. In battle, only one may be deployed at a time but can be quickly swapped for another. Every Pokémon is classified as one of 15 different types of Pokémon: Fire Pokémon are weak against water attacks, flying Pokémon are strong against bug Pokémon, etc. This adds an element of strategy to "party" formation. As the Pokémons gain experience levels, they gain new abilities and grow stronger. Many of them evolve into completely different Pokémon once they reach a certain level or you use a special item on them.
Several gameboy machines can be connected together for players to compete against each other and also to trade the monsters they have captured. The player's aim is to win battles and gain the status of the "World's Greatest Pokemon Master".

The Story

The hero of the Pokémon story is a child, a boy called Ash Ketchum. His love for the incredible creatures makes him dream of becoming a Pokémon master some day. To set the ball rolling, Professor Oak gives him a loveable Pokémon called Pikachu. Misty and Brock, also trainers, join him in his quest. Pikachu is an electric Pokémon whose powers attract the attention of the devious Team Rocket; they are out to steal him. Ash's adventures take his team to new worlds, where strange discoveries about all kinds of Pokémon are made. Warding off the villainous advances of Team Rocket, Ash wants to 'Catch' Em All' and realise his dream
.

Ash is just 10, but very, very ambitious. Luckily, he combines this trait with deep love for his Pokémon. Ash's Japanese name is Satoshi!

Pikachu is one of the most charming Pokemon from the Electric Species of the Raichu Evolution. Found in the Iridian Forest he is Ash's eternal friend. He can unleash electric potential by squeezing his cheeks. Ash once saved Pikachu's life and this created a strong bond of love between them.

Misty got her bike damaged in one of Ash's attempts to save Pikachu. She is nice to everyone, except him. She shares his love for Pokémon, and loves travelling with him and Brock. She loves water Pokémon.

Brock is quite a ladies' man! As for Pokémon, he likes rock and fire types. He decides to help Professor Ivy with her Pokémon research, only to be substituted by Tracey. Tracey reads about and sketches Pokémon. She loves them and wishes to learn about them.

Where there is a hero, there have to be villains!

Gary, make no mistake, is a good trainer and worthy opponent to Ash. But he loves winning more than he does his Pokémon. He is rather full-of-himself.

Jessie and James are spoilt and impulsive. As can be expected, they always are the losers in the end. This does not seem to thwart them from trying to steal Pokémon, especially Pikachu. They are enthusiastic poets as well, every episode features them mouthing Prepare for trouble in unison.

Team Rocket are not complete losers….. they have a Pokémon called Meowtwo who is not just brainy, but can speak intelligible language as well - something the other Pokémon cannot boast of. Like Pikachu, Meowtwo does not stay in a PokéBall. Being truly catty, he thinks up devious plans and gets the others in his Team to follow them.
