The Eiffel Tower is one of the most celebrated of all landmarks,
the symbol of the city of Paris. It is 320.75 metres tall and weighs
7,000,000 kilos. It took more than 300 workers over 2 years to build
this masterpiece.
Till 1930, it was the tallest building in the world.
The
Eiffel Tower was built for the International Exhibition of Paris
of 1889, marking the 100th year of the French
Revolution. The then Prince of Wales, later King Edward
VII of England, opened the tower.
Alexander Gustav Eiffel, after whom the tower is named, was the
engineer for the project.
The tower has 3 platforms. A very expensive restaurant called Jules
Verne is on the second platform. One can get a seat in this restaurant
only by making a reservation well in advance. The top platform has
a bar, souvenir shop, and the (recently restored) office of Gustav
Eiffel. People go up to the topmost level to get a view of the city
of Paris.
To get to the top of the tower you can use
the lift or climb up 1652 steps.
