By
1000 BC, the Shangs were overthrown by the Chous. Under the Chou dynasty,
China gained prominence as a trader of silk, porcelain and spices
for over 200 years. After the Chou dynasty lost its influence, rival
regions fought for power. This battle lasted for centuries till the
Chin king, Shih Huang Ti became the emperor. He introduced a new legal
system and built a very huge road network. Fearing invasion from outsiders,
he had millions of people build the Great Wall of China.
From 200 BC, the Han rulers came to rule China. They followed the
ideas of Confucius and during their rule made Chinese cities such
as Chang-an, the most magnificent in the world.
