Meet Harry Potter, a skinny, bespectacled kid, barely in his teens, and most unlikely of a superhero's image. Yet Harry, not particularly gifted in strength or loads of attitude, has some extraordinary gifts - he is a WIZARD and uses his magical powers to fearlessly fight evil forces and save the world time and again. The super-kid, Harry Potter, was created by J.K. Rowling, a teacher who conceived his character while travelling by a train. She spent five years writing the first Potter book. Potter's first adventure, 'Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone' came out in 1997 and was an instant hit with kids and adults. A new hero had emerged, who fought his dark enemies in a strange way- brewing magical potions and riding broomsticks, quite in contrast to the hunky super heroes like Batman and Superman. After the huge success of the first novel, Rowling wrote three more novels, 'Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets', 'Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azbakan', and 'Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire'. Till date the four novels have sold about 40 million copies and have been translated into 18 languages. Did you know? "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire" sold 350,000 copies in Britain on its first day - the fastest selling book in history! The Potter adventures also contained a whole new set of terms and lingo, invented by Rowling during the creation of her masterpiece. Like the WWF Trump Cards, which were a rage with kids, terms like Quidditch and Muggles were soon being used by kids to boast their Potter GK. Harry Potter's birthday on 31st July has become a mega event with Potter look-alike contests, parties etc.
