Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone
Harry Potter is an orphan who has an unpleasant childhood living with the Dursleys (his uncle, aunt and their son Dudley, who is a bully). Harry's room is in a tiny closet at the foot of the stairs, and he hasn't had a birthday party in eleven years. On his 11th birthday, Harry receives a mysterious letter delivered by an owl messenger - it is an invitation to attend Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. He also learns that his parents had magical powers and did not die in a car accident as he was told by the Dursleys. Rather, they were killed by an evil wizard called Voldemort, who also attempted to kill Harry. Harry still bears a lightening shaped scar on his forehead left by Voldemort and becomes famous for being the only person to survive an attack by Voldemort. Hogwarts is a 1,000-year-old institution that exists in a world unknown to non-magic folk (or Muggles as they are called). Instead of teaching algebra and grammar, students have classes on potions, charms and witchcraft. Professor Binns, who teaches the history of magic, is a ghost. The people in the portraits can talk; move from picture to picture and food magically appears on plates; and the most interesting thing is the game, Quidditch that everyone with magical powers plays. Harry also makes his first friends Hagrid, Hermione and Ron, who help him discover the truth about his parents' mysterious death at the hands of Lord Voldemort.

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets
After being literally locked in his room half the summer at Dursley's house, the Weasleys rescue Harry and bring him to their home in a flying car. Before he could return to school, a house elf named Dobby mysteriously warns him that he will be in mortal danger if he returns to Hogwarts. This year Harry is 12, he has two good friends, Granger and Ron and he is now a star Quidditch player. He is even getting used to being stared at because of the lightening shaped scar on his forehead. Here again there is something new to test his mettle. The new teacher, Mr. Gilderoy Lockhart sees Harry as a kindred spirit and he is suspected of misusing his magic. But worst of all he hears nasty voices from the wall that no one else can hear and things get worse after the slogan "The chamber of secrets has been opened" appears on the school walls after which students start turning into stone. While uncovering this mystery, Harry and his friends discover the secret behind the "Chamber of Secrets". This story also highlights Hermione as an excellent student and ends with Harry trudging off to spend another summer with Dursleys after having survived this adventure.

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
At fourteen years of age, Harry is in the fourth year at the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Lord Voldemort, along with his "special friend," a lovely snake named Nagina, are still trying to kill him. After spending another uneventful summer with the Weasley's the gang returns to Hogwarts where they find out - there were to be no Quidditch matches between Gryffindor, Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff, and Slytherin, the four rival houses at Hogwarts. Instead, there was to be a competition that hasn't happened for a hundred years. Hogwarts will compete with two other schools, Beauxbatons and Durmstrang, in a Triwizard Tournament. To win, the contestants must complete a series of tasks, as well as a few death defying feats. As expected Harry ends up as one of the contestants. As the tournament begins, danger is not far behind. In addition, Voldemort is getting closer and closer, and Harry's life is becoming much more fear-ridden than he could possibly imagine. This story also shows us that Harry is quickly growing up. He has a major crush on Cho Chang, one of his classmates.

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
In this story Harry is 13 and begins to learn more about his parents and how they died and even hears his mother's screams. He ultimately finds out who betrayed his parents and solves the mystery. Dursleys' visitor, Aunt Marge, troubles Harry so much that he casts a spell on her that makes her inflate like a balloon and drift up to the ceiling. Fearing punishment, Harry packs his bags and runs away with his owl. He goes to the Leaky Cauldron, the infamous tavern-gateway to Diagon Alley, where he spends the rest of the summer, visited often by his friends. In the meanwhile Sirius Black, one of Lord Voldemort's follower escapes from Azkaban, a prison used to house rogue wizards, and his only mission is to kill Harry. Unlike the previous years Harry's movements are now restricted because of the danger from Sirius.
