The Atlantic Ocean

The Atlantic Ocean is located between Africa, Europe, Antarctica and the Americas. The Equator divides the Atlantic Ocean into the North Atlantic Ocean and South Atlantic Ocean.

With a total area of 82.3 million square kilometres, it's the second largest ocean in the world.

The ocean surface is covered with sea ice in the North and South for most part of the year.

The deepest point in the Atlantic Ocean is the Puerto Rico Trench at a depth of 8,605 metres.

The Atlantic Ocean provides some of the world's most heavily trafficked sea routes, between and within the Eastern and Western Hemispheres. Other economic activity includes the exploitation of natural resources, e.g., fishing and production of crude oil and natural gas in the Caribbean Sea, Gulf of Mexico, and North Sea.
