 HISTORY

Cricket was first played in England more than 300 years ago.

The first ball and bat were however very different from the ones we see today. A stone was used as a ball and the bat was a tree branch, which looked more like a hockey stick than a cricket bat!

The earliest recorded match was played in Sussex, in England in 1697.

The famous Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) was founded in 1787 with offices in the Lord's cricket ground. The MCC helped organize the rules and regulations of the game, which increased the popularity of cricket.

In India the game was first introduced by Britishers who came here as part of the colonial rule. The first all-Indian club, the Orient Cricket Club was formed in 1848.

By the early 20th century the Indian princely states began to form their own teams and started employing professional English coaches. India also became a member of the Imperial Cricket Conference (now the International Cricket Council) in 1926. It played its first official Test against England in 1932.

The Ranji trophy for the national championship was instituted in 1934-35.
